ABOUT THIS PAINTING
Knocklofty bushlands persistently nudge against the city of Hobart, Tasmania. I walk their narrow paths almost daily when I’m in Tasmania to see my family. Now, in Mid-Summer, it presents a mixture of beauty and risk.
Everywhere you look, fallen branches and sticks form an almost impenetrable carpet of prime kindling wood. Tinderbox dry! Strong winds whip across and down these hills. A casual spark will quickly leap into flame, and will surely hitch a ride to Hobart on the feckless wind.
I do not usually paint such landscapes, but it has been calling to me daily this summer. I want to show the danger in Knocklofty by the depth and vast volume of its uncleared under storey.
Already so many trees are either fallen, or carry scars from previous fires. They seem to be waiting, knowing it’s not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’they will burn again. There are no defences here.
We are not consciously caring for this special area of ours, and we are leaving it vulnerable - again. Do we not learn?
I have used layered acrylic techniques to show the depth of dry timber here. The gnarly trees seem to emit a stressed energy too!
