This is a cute little (60x60cms) painting (in my humble opinion) and one of my favourite subjects - salt lakes in the desert! At first the painting was in normal desert colours - yes, red earth but not as red as it becomes at sunset.
So I transformed it with one of the common and vivid orange sunsets that are seen in that country. What a change!I love salt lakes in the desert particularly, because the earth is red (in Central Australia) and the lakes are white, grey/blue or even pink - what's not to like about such contrast? And there are bleached bones of animals, trees and other detritus which combined with the bleached salt lake surface, give a lot of interest.
Also I'm quite proud of this painting because I did it entirely with a severe broken shoulder (my painting arm). The only downside was that I had to paint it flat, as couldn't lift my arm, and I couldn't control the arm well enough doing the sticks and stones. So they're a bit wobbly :(
Anyway, I finally decided they didn't detract from the work too much, I didn't feel entirely useless, and it's a little point of interest to know it was done under these rather trying conditions?
