The tide is on its way in past the river mouth crammed with yachts. I love this river but this is a new kind of painting for me: new subject, new technique, new colour palette.
The sand, being encroached upon by the tide, is made of highly textured and layered pastel shades (reminiscent of one of my favourite groups of impressionist painters “THE FAUVES” - meaning WILD ANIMALS! That is how the critics of the day reviewed, named, and dismissed them) but two dark river boats (one almost sinister) and bits of flotsam preside, which dilutes the Fauvist plan.
Most of all, I’ve flirted with composition, disobeying almost all the rules I know. That was fun - some rules are made to be broken, and I think art rules are nearly at the top of my list! 🤗
